Can Trump convince Iran to ditch its nuclear programme?

Donald Trump is moving quickly. Since becoming president again, he has tried to stop wars in Gaza and Ukraine but failed. He has bombed Yemen and started a trade war. Now, he is focusing on Iran.

US President Donald Trump (L) wrote to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei (R) last month outlining a deal to limit Iran's nuclear activities

Iran is a big problem from Trump’s first term. The question is the same: Can Iran be stopped from building a nuclear weapon?

Iran says it doesn’t want nuclear weapons, but other countries think it does. If Iran gets a nuclear bomb, it could start a dangerous arms race or even war in the Middle East.

What Was the Old Nuclear Deal?

In 2015, Iran made a deal with the U.S., UK, France, Germany, Russia, and China. It was called the JCPOA. Iran agreed to:

  • Limit its nuclear program

  • Allow inspections

  • In return, economic sanctions would be lifted

But in 2018, Trump pulled the U.S. out of the deal. He said it helped Iran fund groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. The U.S. put sanctions back on Iran.

Since then, Iran has ignored some rules and made more enriched uranium. Experts say Iran could soon have enough for a nuclear bomb.

Trump’s New Plan: Pressure and Talks

Trump has brought back strong sanctions on Iran. He also sent a letter to Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, asking for new talks. Soon, U.S. and Iranian officials will meet in Oman.

Trump’s warning is clear: Make a deal or face military action.

Will Iran Agree?

Iran’s economy is struggling badly. Some leaders might want a deal to remove sanctions. But hardliners may refuse big demands, like stopping all nuclear work.

What Does the U.S. Want?

  • Iran must stop all uranium enrichment (even for energy)

  • No more support for groups like Hezbollah

  • Completely shut down its nuclear program

This may be too much for Iran to accept.

Israel’s Warning

Israel’s leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, says Iran must completely give up its nuclear program—like Libya did in 2003. But Iran will likely refuse.

What If Talks Fail?

Israel has thought about bombing Iran’s nuclear sites. But many are deep underground, so it would be hard. The U.S. might need to help.

Trump doesn’t want another long war, but he has sent more weapons to the region, just in case.

Time Is Running Out

Trump wants a deal in two months, but the first deal took two years. If talks fail, war could happen.

Iran says it’s ready for a deal—if the U.S. stops threats. But with both sides far apart, the risk of conflict is high.
